Cold War Children

by Chris Sorrenti

We’ve seen it all before
different actors
same stage
though the audience
much younger then
remember those newsreels?
in case of attack
duck and cover
under desks children
and it will all go away

Growing up in the shadow
of the hydrogen bomb
never knowing when
the missiles would fly
cold would turn hot
cooler heads prevailing
during the Cuban crisis
one second to midnight
hour hand held back
by a quick thinking
Soviet submarine captain

Since then perhaps naively
thought we had evolved
the world less tolerant of
this kind of behavior
a friend asking me
When will nations
stop attacking one another?
I answered Never
it’s in our nature
the trick is to survive long enough
without blowing up the planet

Depressing conclusion - because I also believe it to be true.
