Inspired by Kenneth Patchen

by Johanna May

BECAUSE YOU TRIED MAKE UP
AND YOU LOOKED LIKE A BLOB FISH
BUT NOT IN A CUTE WAY

They were all lining up at the square,
while you were still counting your whiskers.
“You are a pretty catfish,” said the flamingo.
Your whiskers stood on ends,
and you came back home
to the safe comfy gumbo you live in.

I can always count on you for something unique and this led me to Kenneth Patchen whom I had not read. Thanks for both.
