there are plenty of us still around
canines of the metaphoric kind
we lie together but far enough apart
not to trespass - cause alarm

and despite transgressions of various kinds
our mutual histories peppered with them
knowing full well the past can’t be changed
in that semi-state of daydreams – open our eyes

glance across the yard to one another
what’s still good hopefully in and between us
sometimes gets an urge to give a friendly poke
yet never fully knowing if that other sleeping dog
will turn into a rattlesnake
