It’s a stranger world these days. Not that it wasn't already strange enough, but in a different way.

Shortages of every kind, from food to medicines, clothing to appliances, automobiles, microchips. The list goes on and on.

It’s not like the old days, where you just walked into a Sears, went to the
appliance section, and picked out a range or fridge, etc. from any number of models. Delivered that same week for an extra charge.

Now, because of shortages of workers, the supply chain has been interrupted in all kinds of unforeseen ways. It’s not uncommon now for someone to purchase a new major appliance, but have to wait weeks or even months to get it. I’ve already picked out a possible new dryer, if necessary, from the Canadian Appliance Source CAS (where I bought my fridge last year), and they are in stock, but Jason and I have decided we can wait till the spring, when hopefully the supply situation has improved. He’s even offered to throw in $150. towards whatever we end up doing; repair vs. purchase new. Meanwhile, neither of us mind hang drying our washing. It’ll be interesting to see how much it affects the hydro bill.

One of the few bright spots is that I found my favorite kind of canned salmon, Pacific Wild Pink, back at the Metro. I had stopped buying it for a while, because all they had was the deboned deskinned. I bought it a couple of times, and it was absolutely gross. Had a funny taste from the extra processing. Guess I wasn’t the only one to think that way.

Don’t buy it that way all the time, but it’s fast and convenient, and I don’t mind picking out the few bones. We eat a fair amount of fresh trout and salmon fillets also, as well as Captain Highliner’s breaded (English style) fish.

No shortage of canned fish...or fruit for that matter, which is a good thing. In addition to bananas, I like my canned peaches, packed in water. I’ve never understood why companies add more sugar to canned fruit, when to me, they’re sweet enough as it is. I ate a lot of water melon this summer. Another of what I like to call my energy foods, especially on a hot summer’s day, like this past season. What a heat wave that was, or better, series of them.

For Thanksgiving, I bought a small turkey, about nine pounds, which is now the perfect size for Jason and me. Leftovers lasted most of the following week.

Inflation is supposed to be up to about 4.4%, though doubtful pension checks will go up that high with the next cost of living increase in January.

The price of gas has gone through the roof. I feel bad for all those car owners, and especially those who depend on vehicles for their livelihood. Businesses of all kinds are screaming for workers, as everyone is trying to return as much as possible to pre-COVID normalcy, and government handouts drawing to an end.

Jason, along with his BFF, Paul (met while working at Produce Depot), are taking me out for my birthday next week. Going to see the remake of Dune at the Lansdowne Park theatre. The boys have been there before, but this is my first time. It’s a different kind of set up, complete with arm chairs, a restaurant menu and bar, should one wish a cocktail. Aside from an occasional small bottle of wine, I drink very little these days. Part of my dietary change when I became Diabetic, which for the same reason has since gone into remission. Besides, alcohol doesn’t mix well with Metformin. Even though my Type II has been reversed, I’m staying on the meds for now.

It’ll be nice to go out to something special again. Haven’t been to a movie theatre in about three years.
