At my age
when first getting out of bed
the accumulative damage
to body and mind
felt most acutely

Stiff back
from a work injury
lifting my weight in
boxes of paper files
when a young man
and invincible
years ago

Left knee
aches off and on
physiotherapy recommended
but will I someday need a cane?
or worse...wheelchair??
nursing home???

And then
the lingering mental scars
from past altercations/disputes
with those long since
removed from my life
some even dead
ha ha – look at you!
guess I shouldn’t laugh
someday it will be me

Quickly wiped away
with that first magic cup
which most certainly
calls for second
and on really bad days
demands a third
and finally I am ready
to face the world

Addicted?
you can bet your own aches and pains
I am
and in light of all the above
not afraid to admit it
