National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by Chris Sorrenti
We were never taught about it
In elementary school
Nor grade 10 history class
Aside from the odd person we’d encounter
Who looked different than us
Our only exposure to Indians
Were the Hollywood kind on TV
Now the time for pretty words – token apologies
Has come to an end
No longer can two nations
Within this single country tolerate
The status quo of
Negligent governments – politicians -
Broken promises
From now on
September 30th is a federal holiday
Catching us off guard
As the residential schools and unmarked graves
Systematic racism – genocide
Never again -
it must be today - from now on
A good first step in true reconciliation
