Payday again, and as I like to say, the bills are paid, there’s food on the table, but it doesn’t leave me a whole lot of mad money. In other words, I won’t be flying to Hawaii next week, with or without a pandemic. LOL

Especially nowadays with the price of groceries…everything on the rise. There’s a shortage of microchips world wide, which means new cars can’t be manufactured, at least not as quickly as they used to be. This in turn means trouble for the car rental industry, who like to have the latest models on the lot. What is available is now going for 2-4 times the price in pre-COVID days. As I’ve said before, I don’t own a vehicle, but do like to rent one occasionally. If I could, wouldn’t rent one now though, due to my eyesight, but was hoping next summer after the operations, but that’s a whole year away, and a lot can happen between now and then.

Anyhoo, J and I have agreed to tough it out for the month of October, without a dryer. With interest rates on the rise as well, any major expenditures I incur these days has to be put on my credit card. I figure a couple more payments, including today’s, will bring it down to a comfortable level to cover the repair or the purchase of a new dryer, if necessary. Meanwhile, neither of us have a problem hang drying our clothes. I even did my bed clothes that way the other day, and they dried out fast enough.

As I don’t own a printer (seldom need one), I did a screen capture of my ‘proof of double vaccination’, received in PDF format from the province, converted it to a jpeg, then loaded the image onto a flash drive. Anything I need printed, I can get done at the local UPS store in a nearby mall. I just wanted a copy, but much to my surprise and delight, the guy working there was even able to reduce and laminate the document for 4 bucks. I then walked it next door to Gabriel’s restaurant, presented it and my driver’s licence for ID, and was promptly given a table, socially distanced from other tables, of course. I then had my favorite breakfast; bacon and two over easy, with brown toast. Sometimes I get sausages too, or just by themselves with the eggs. A small slice of watermelon to start the meal, almost a ritual now. Gabriel home fries are to die for, add salt & vinegar, and they are indeed a taste of Heaven. One of the things that has helped me survive this pandemic.

Things aren’t good though in other parts of the country, namely Alberta and Saskatchewan. Soaring infections, Alberta so bad, that they’re on the brink of having to triage ICU patients, due to maxed out capacity, in other words, doctors given no choice but to determine who lives and dies, based on various factors.

Both provinces got caught in the trap of trying to please everyone, when like Ontario…eventually, they should have clamped down earlier. And like Ontario currently, the majority of new cases are among the partially or non-vaccinated. The military are supposed to be brought in to assist. The other alternative is flying patents to other provinces, where the pressure isn’t so bad.

The other bad thing about all this, is that hospital staff are being redeployed to fight COVID-19, so that other kinds of surgery have been postponed…indefinitely. This includes hip replacements, etc., and Cancer surgery.

Kids are back in school, and sure enough, there are infections, unfortunately, some even dying. The bright spot however, is that the labs are working hard in refining and testing the vaccines, so that they’re safe for children, ages 5 to 11.
