How do I feel?

Hard to believe 20 years
has gone by so quickly
an entire generation
never to know the world
that existed before the towers fell

I was on strike that day
but at home
refusing to walk a picket line
story for another day
when my boss called on the phone
asked if I had heard the news

How do I feel now?
I don’t know to be honest with you

As an amateur historian
happy I guess to have survived
been able to see what the world looks like
turned upside down
but with so many loved ones since departed
saddened that I no longer recognize
that same world around me
