Necessary Evil

by Johnny Crimson

In a long narrated list
Of necessary evils
The child’s name stood out.

For he checked all the boxes
And ticked all the crosshairs
In a list of unorthodox lives.

But how could a baby
Be evil, that’s just crazy?
Well for starters, he never cried.

Through abuse all around him
The violence that surrounds him
He just sat in his crib and stared.

As his circus act parents
fight like acrobats in marriage
And the child just deepens his gaze.

See the evil from that baby
Wasn’t his , he wasn’t crazy
Just a product of environment.

So take your list and shove
And cross his name off the above
And take that baby into a healthy home.

And raise him just like you
All nimble and feeble
Until his mind is left with nothing...

But a necessary evil.

I have read this several times. It is both fascinating and disturbing. Just as I gain hope in that second to last stanza, you dash my plans for a happy home for a child and the loop appears, as it often does in real life. Enjoyable structure to read.
