Imaginary Lover

by Chris Sorrenti

She’ll be sitting in her car
beside you at a red light
getting off the bus
when you’re getting on

Her features are always different
but her beauty never changes
that imaginary lover
someday could be real

You’ve followed her
into shopping centers
seen her in your office tower
while visiting another floor

Eating lunch at a favorite restaurant
glance over and there she is
you’d swear you’ve seen her somewhere before
but can’t quite put your finger on it

She’s often dressed in the prettiest of clothing
other times just a T-shirt and jeans
a touch of mascara on her eyes
blush and lipstick never overbearing

Cause she’s someone else’s girl next door
radiant and always natural
that imaginary lover
someday could be real

You give her a friendly smile
hoping she’ll look your way
but never does
walking by pressed for time

Yes there are plenty of fish swimming
in this great big sea
some of them are pink
while others blue

That imaginary lover
someday could be real
the important question being
how do you get to meet them all?
