My dad (and mom to a lesser degree) was an avid music lover and record collector, including Jazz, the Big Bands, Country, all the crooners (especially Nat King Cole), and on into more contemporary (Top 30) music. When my siblings and I were growing up, the radio or stereo were often on.
One of the multitude of songs he introduced me to was the Yellow Rose of Texas, recorded by the Mitch Miller band in 1955. It was on one of the many collector LP sets he purchased over the years. I initially thought it was from the American Civil War (1861 – 1865), during which it was quite popular, especially with cavalrymen, however it first appeared in a song book, published in 1853. It has since been recorded by various artists, including Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
