As I’ve said it here before, wow, what a difference a month can make. There are vaccines everywhere; dare I say…even a glut. My doctor has been urging me to apply for an earlier second dose, but I heard on the radio that the earliest available injections (via the provincial portal) are in early August. I don’t see the point in risking losing my spot in mid-August, so my gut instinct is telling me to stay put. I’m not going anywhere this summer anyways, so am happy to continue ‘business as usual’ in terms of moving about, socializing in public or private. I do miss my bacon and eggs at Gabriel, which should be (indoor dining) coming back soon.

The good news is that each week Ontario is experiencing record numbers of injections, with the amount of daily new infections gone way down, as we inch slowly toward herd immunity.

Jason, still has to get his first shot, and I’ve been reminding him in as nice a fashion as possible to apply. He’s as pig-headed as his old man though in some regards, and isn’t going to go until he’s good and ready. Needless to say, as a parent, this troubles me to the Nth degree.

All through the pandemic, I’ve watched as Zoom technology moved in and assisted the masses in family, business and artistic communication. A poet friend, Don ‘Kingfisher’ Campbell, in Los Angeles, has been urging me to read a few poems for a Saturday afternoon Zoom group he started a few months ago. So, my camera just arrived today, and I will go through the process of setting it up. One of the reasons I’m glad Jason lives with me. I hate learning new technology (it never ends lol), but as he’s much more adept at this stuff, always manages to save the day.

This is a strange period, poetry-wise, with things finally quieting down in one sense, creating a vacuum of sorts. Canada itself remains fluid as ever. The country has gone into a state of deep mourning and reflection upon the news that thousands of native children lie in unmarked graves, victims of the Residential School System, run by the Canadian government and Catholic church, over successive generations.

As always, I’m struggling, trying to keep up...adapt to the new reality, personally and artistically. And it shows in my poetry, good and bad.

As the pandemic winds down, and hopefully stays down, I would like to wrap up this collection, but will keep it open ended for now. With this crazy roller coaster ride, no telling what could happen next.
