Canada Day 2021
by Chris Sorrenti
the roar of snowbirds
over house
pierces early morning calm
the first jets heard
around these parts in weeks
despite having seen them
a hundred times before
we would still run to the window
but this year’s different
something missing from the equation
to the backdrop of covid recovery
discovery of more unmarked graves
across the country canadians
indigenous and non alike
stop to catch their collective breath
ponder the meaning
that on today of all days
why the flag flies at half mast
above parliament hill
