As best and beautiful
as Canada can be
it too has seen its share of genocide
unknown to many
never taught in school
ignored by the guilty
those little ones
who didn’t make it home
unknowing they were loved and missed
never forgotten
by their kin

The Catholic church has been party
to many genocides
over the centuries
coupled with the iron rule
of the British empire
some of them
don’t always kill
as the 50s and 60s scoop
Residential School System
First Nation families torn apart
leaving its victims
if they survived
scarred for life

Across this great country
how many more unmarked graves
are out there?
estimated in the thousands
soon all finally to know
beyond coverup - heel dragging
by progressive governments
we the innocent
finally bearing witness
to the sin of our political forefathers

Author's Note: An initial attempt to capture the current tragedy unfolding here in Canada, sparked by the discovery in Kamloops, BC, of unmarked graves, connected to a local First Nation Residential School, containing the remains of 215 native children, some as young as 3 years old.
