Groundhog Days by Chris Sorrenti
In 2005, a large grove behind my project was leveled to make way for a new housing project. What the developers hadn’t factored into the mix, were the animals that they were displacing in the process. With the bulldozers moving in, my neighbourhood was suddenly inundated by a wave of raccoons, skunks, and groundhogs. Many taking up residence under storage sheds and the hollow back steps of our yards.
I had a skunk living under my backstep for a short while, and so following the advice of others, poked a bleach-soaked rag into an access cavity, which did the trick.
One of the friendlier (migrant) residents was a groundhog, that inspired the poem, The New Neighbour, in Evolution. He eventually moved on. Below is a shot of that new neighbour:
