Over the course of my life
I’ve accumulated several of them
some are physical
others mental
while each
no matter their nature
affecting me in a spiritual way

A few I inherited from my parents
others created by myself
via inexperience and/or misadventure
though learning well from my mistakes

Every one handicapped me
in a specific way or ways
so where possible
through dogged determination
I’ve managed to sever them
or at least
make their loads as light as possible

This latest is of the physical variety
but again affecting me in all three ways
that I will no doubt have to haul
for the rest of my days

It sits on the bridge of my nose
while the rest over my ears
gets smudged or dirty
in the course of living out each hour
and though a burden
it has given me
especially my eyes
a new lease on life
allowing me to continue enjoying
those people and activities
I love best

Upon arrival in Heaven
I look forward to being free of all of them
