Soul Mate

by Chris Sorrenti

for all the distance in our nearness
guess I shouldn’t be surprised

my love for you fails to waver
waves a white trillium emblazed flag
stretched across
attraction’s mighty wind
always ready for your jabber
the prettiest facts machine
spellbound at the galaxy
you hold and cherish
between your heart and head
I marvel at your inner and
outer child’s wonderment

I listen and respond as best I can
though not everything you say
remains in short term memory
but neither worry
knowing from experience
when the time is right in the future
it comes bubbling to the surface again

so that I can feel you
in my DNA
causing subtle mutations
in a most positive enlightening way
too long apart
hunger pangs turn to craving
I write them out
first in long hand
then set them free
in the electronic expanses of the Internet

what is it that troubles or pleases you?
I ask across the near distance
though already knowing
in my heart of hearts
the answer to the question
