This is Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada.
Even though tomorrow, Monday, is officially the day, Dean, Jason and I celebrated yesterday, with a 15lb turkey, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, and gravy.
The turkey was about 3lbs bigger than what I usually buy. Most of the smaller birds had been quickly scooped up this year however, due to orders from the government to stay home and within our immediate family bubbles. No unnecessary travelling or visits from family and friends, thus larger turkeys passed over, which is kind of surreal…never thought I’d see that happen. The bird barely fit into the big pan I usually use for roasts, but a nice snug fit none the less, with nothing hanging out.
Weird too without Dawn, but life goes on. I’m still in mourning, but buoyed by memories of our time together.
As we boys are celebrating, we also picked up a 40 ouncer of Crown Royale. J and I only get it on special occasions, and if I take my time, and pace myself, the rye is good to me, laying off the Metformin for a day, without serious repercussions. I learned a long time ago to respect hard liquor, and the few times I drink now, why I prefer wine. I only drink beer when out for lunch or supper, and two bottles or glasses of draft is my limit. When Dawn and I were out celebrating New Years, I had two drafts, a club sandwich, then having had my fill, switched to coffee for the rest of the night.
I drink my whiskey with water and ice these days; no sugary or bubbly soft drinks, so I stay hydrated, and keep the calories down, which is one of the downsides of drinking wine; extra calories and dehydration. With any alcohol, moderation is the key, and eating something in-between drinks or afterwards.
