Data Element Exploitation Program (DEEP)

by Chris Sorrenti

It’s easy to learn
just pop on the Infomode 500
and enter your Logical Identifier Code (LIC)
the terminal identifier’s already been
registered at head office in Ottawa
and the next thing you know
you’re operational

How does it feel to have access?
to one of the most powerful
Automated Financial Management and Accounting Systems
(AFMAS)
in the entire federal government
it’s really just a duplicate of a larger mainframe at DSS
(Department of Supply and Services)
just across the river in Gatineau

Want to improve the system?
well then put in a Product Work Request (PWR)
Supply and Services will write the software
you’ll have to tweak the data base
but that’s what AFMAS II is all about
getting more information for your (or better taxpayer’s) dollar
even if you encounter an occasional bug

If it’s reporting you want
overnight, month-end or otherwise
that’s what DEEP is for
easy interface with the FINCON mother system
banking and accounting requirements handled
without problem
linked by satellite coast to coast

Author's Note: When I worked in a records office, two of our main clients were the Finance and Financial Systems directorates. One of the things that never failed to amaze me about the Canadian government was the dizzying array of acronyms in use. With my department, Environment Canada, so many in fact, we used an acronym dictionary to keep track of them all, some of which were incredibly, and in my opinion, unnecessarily complicated. I sometimes wondered if there wasn’t someone stuck in a little office in the basement, whose sole job was to come up with ever confusing new ones. LOL
