Winnipeg Airport by Chris Sorrenti
hopped on a flight with the
canadian armed forces
with a friend of mine
military girl
seconds later
we were out on the prairie
at a strange airport
in another land
the voice on the PA
came out in british
while a security man glared
with an evil tone
as we watched suitcases
come out on the conveyor
the voice then said
“be patient please
your bombs will come directly to you”
when I turned around
my friend had disappeared
so I ran down the terminal
shouting her name in my mind
till I came to a counter
there she sat
on a large set of scales
smiling strangely
a fresh coat of mousse
glistened wet in her hair
her mouth then distorted
into the shape of a horn
1930s cartoon character
as if she wanted to kiss
so startling
I woke up relieved
though disappointed
wanting to see
how it would all turn out

06/12/2020 Author's Note: Although already familiar with dream inspiration, in the early 1980s I seriously began to explore and tap into them for writing ideas. I can barely remember some of my dreams (vague bits ’n pieces) by the morning, while others are quite vivid (Visions, Dream Lover, Dreams of Using, Dream Pet, amid the chaos). Others are quite disjointed, with a stream of unrelated thoughts linked together into a surreal movie by my subconscious. The above poem is an example of this. Believe it or not, all of the elements of the poem I had had contact with during the day or days preceding. It was titled Winnipeg Airport because it was silently understood that that’s where we had landed, though aside from pictures, I had never actually been there. The only other time my mind was able to work this way, was when I was on Morphine while in hospital in February 2017. The Morphine dreams however were much more vivid...elaborate, reaching back way beyond the recent past, pulling up thoughts and experiences that had occurred decades ago, many of them long since forgotten.
