Acknowledgement

by Richard Vince

What did you expect? There is
No comfort in a friendship that
You destroyed, like the light of
A Sun that only dazzles.

The days of secret treaties are
Long gone, consigned to old
Correspondence you keep better
Than promises; they were
Merely the wanderings of a heart
That could not keep still.

More years have passed since
Than were enjoyed, and yet
That, somehow, will never
Stop you; not even the memory
Of how you disparaged the same
Failing in others.

It has always been too late
For apologies, for grovelling:
Her finality showed she knew
Exactly what she would not miss.

If, someday, you get to
Thank her too, save your words.
They will be meant as nothing
But a selfish cry for attention;
They will say nothing but
How pathetic you are.

Powerful capture of lost friendship, Richard.
