Lottery II by Chris Sorrenti
Almost a year since the first Brick and Mortars
opened in Ontario
and too few new ones since then
Some provinces such as Alberta
treat their citizens like responsible adults
sell it in corner stores
but not here
thanks to the lottery system
few locations have been added
to the Ottawa area since April 2019
Those who don’t know this city
in terms of population
not the biggest in Canada
however, one of the largest, area-wise
a small metropolis
with lots of satellite hamlets, villages and towns
Was a time not that long ago
maybe thirty…forty years ago
one could see plenty of green space
while driving between Ottawa proper
and these smaller communities
same for Gatineau, Quebec
just across the river from the National Capital
Now, thanks to urban sprawl
myriad housing projects
gradually filling the in-betweens
while due to shrinking real estate in the inner city
height restrictions have been relaxed
developers build upward instead of around
The lottery however hasn’t addressed this reality
a couple of stores downtown, one in the west end
and yet Hobo at 391 Bank Street
wants to add an additional location
a couple of miles away in the Market
though another company, Fire & Flower, is already there
and still nothing in the south or east ends
Obviously, these people are more interested in profit
than fair geographical distribution
and the provincial government says nothing about the imparity
happy enough to be making tax money off
online sales and the few brick & mortars so far
The whole idea of legalization
was to wipe out the cannabis black market
so far, glaringly obvious that plan has failed
as many users have either stuck with
or returned to the tried and true
getting the same quality of product or better
at half the price from illegal dealers
some of whom even deliver
