desperately we seek
some meaning
to the routine
jump the hoops
play our cards
hoping for reason
justice
in what often
appears only as madness
praying to whatever god
might listen
like hyperactive school kids
myriad questions
ready to ask our creator
and yet grudges
running so deep
so long
amongst ourselves
as a species
why would anyone
or anything
want to save us?
better left unthreatening
to this backwash
of galaxy
the answer’s simple
there is no need
to be negative
how gentle
kind
and loving
we all can be
when things
are going right
been talk before
of second comings
or even better
first ones
but every time
the date arrives
we’re only left
with letdown
and back
to the collective
hamster wheel
we go marching
the more technical
we become
ever more powerful
gods to ourselves
though also ever deeper
into the pit
of unhappiness
and loneliness
we descend
as talk rises again
of the latest arrival
we’re given a question
of multiple choice
the correct answer of which
there is no alternative
but to wait
whilst we continue
this dance
of quiet desperation
and heave
our stomachs’ contents
at the possibility
the tune
may never change
will Quetzalcoatl
truly deliver us from
this obscene
comedy of errors?
or propel us
ever further into
the maw of sin?
though if experience
serves us correctly
more likely as before
be just another
no show
