Going on seven years retirement
who’d've thought I still need an alarm clock
my electronic one
I simply use to listen to the radio now
unless I have an appointment
not very often these days

Meanwhile my other alarm clock
goes off anywhere between 4 and 6am
don’t have to set it
turns on and off by itself
with built in legs it positions itself
at the foot or side of my bed

On especially lazy mornings
it will even jump up beside my head
and with a mournful cry won’t stop
until I open my eyes and sit up
then it’s down to the fridge
to pull out a can
to keep from setting it off again

Going on seven years retirement now
and when my alarm clock is done with me
I can go back to bed for a few more hours
or at least until that next MEEOWWW...
