Nauticus

by Chris Sorrenti

Searching always
for that Utopian vision
Man and machine
together as one
the seeds of progress
planted in civilization
fueled by Hydrogen
heated by the Sun
its nuclear energy
turning all of us
around and around
the wheel moves forward
Nauticus
You’ve only begun

Reaching always
for that further galaxy
Man and telescope
together as one
eyes and ears
in coordinated parallel
searching broadly
for celestial ally
only to confirm
an age-old alibi
Existence
in that to explain
the throne and reign
of Nauticus

Touching always
the womb of knowledge
Man and computer
together as one
a sacred text
steadily growing
unanswered questions
History
shrinking ignorance
one byte at a time
an animal
born of physics
and biology
never to be tamed
forever the glory
of moving forward
forever the power
of Nauticus

Author's Note: I was mistaken about the amount of poems that came out of early experimentation with the word, Cybernaut, this being the third, however written later in 1975. I decided then to experiment with the word itself, to give it a more profound meaning to go along what I wanted to say in the new poem. And so, removing the first two syllables and adding two new syllables at the end, I came up with what I was looking for...and a brand-new word.
