Torching the Pass by Chris Sorrenti
it’s not God who abandons us
but we who abandon ourselves
the young turks lift off to claim their prize
young…or old - no matter
for I’m finally at peace in my wandering
and in this
gladly thrust the mantel
for the mounting trophies
already begun for them
as I once -
the latest idiot
both somber and gleaming
throughout my funeral
the up and down
as in all things
shining a clear path
through tulips and pine cones
though how long do tulips and pine cones last?
down here!
I wave to them
but much too absorbed in the craft
they wing by
eagles on the rise to meet their destiny
and in this
there’s nothing wrong
only how things were meant to be
either fight to stay afloat
in the face of God
or burn and crash
pain as in all things
lasting but a short while
with landing gear firmly below me
nosebleeds finally at bay
I smile at their medication
labeled ‘testosterone’
but how long will it last?
oh! how I love the 21st century
