Benign

by Chris Sorrenti

I will slip away slip away
Into invisible
so you cannot see me
in case you are malignant

Meanwhile
let us wait upon
the biopsy
see what’s really ticking

but the dermatologist says
it’s only Basal Cell Cancer
benign benign benign

what a wonderful word
ah but did he get it all?
is there more?
or was it only one?
to the surgeon we must go
months from now
thanks to the health care system

And the Metformin is finally working
blood sugar down to
7.5 from 9.0
I feel better overall

Meanwhile
I will slip away slip away
so you cannot find me
as I meditate on
this and that
benign benign benign

Benign, in the mouth of a clinician, is designed to be reassuring - in the mind of the patient it is, at best, a state of remission. You have expressed a fine balance between process and consequence.
