On Reactivating My Facebook Account by Chris Sorrenti
Like a lot of other people
jumping on to what seemed
only a fad
I opened an account
initially failing to see the significance
of the thing
just more software to learn
which in and off itself
was becoming quite tiresome
in 2007
having mastered HTML
needed to manage a personal web site
in addition to
Sasquatch and The Ontario Poetry Society
I posted a few things
then shut it down
too busy with work, family
Poetry commitments in the real world
in addition to the websites
various related friendships
it wasn’t missed
In the years that followed
my life changed dramatically
a relationship
and still
with not enough time on my hands
one by one
I stood down from the writing commitments
loved ones, friends
a whole social network
either moved or passed away
and soon realized
by almost missing a family event
but for a chance phone call
I had become a technological dinosaur
Relationship ended
few if any get-togethers
less and less communication
on the land-line
by 2013 retirement
my social life had dwindled
to that of a hermit
though happy not to travel
in the outside world every single day
there was definitely something missing
The wheels began to turn
a lot of people I knew
had accounts there
I could reconnect with a
whole worldwide network
without having to leave the house
share myself
a lifetime’s poetry
and photography
sitting in hardcopy albums
computer drives
otherwise no one would ever see
learn again from others
and grow once more
