Lowlife

by Chris Sorrenti

every morning I pass the Legal Aid office
on the way to work
at 7AM
a line already formed outside

the riffraff of society
lowlifes unable to afford a lawyer

that’s the way I always saw them

till one day found myself
having also to pass through that door

though purposely waiting till 10 o’clock
so that the rush hour traffic passing by
had cleared
and I could immediately go inside
