Forty-Three Years Ago Today

by Thomas K. Hunt

Forty-three years ago today
with a diploma in hand, we stepped from the stage
Proud smiles on our face captured on polaroids
We now tasted freedom, and it was time to make a choice

Forty-three years ago today
we partied and danced
We were on our way
Tears were shed with the word goodbye
between lifelong friends that couldn't help but cry

Forty-three years ago today, some took to the highway
and some chose to stay
Though separated by miles, the hearts stayed connected
Solid friendships that have never been affected

Forty-three years ago today
We stood tall and had a lot to say
while feeling invincible in every way

It was time to make a statement
It was time to make our mark
It was time for us to find out
it's not just a walk in the park

Forty-three years ago today
I remember it like it was yesterday
Caps and gowns, proud parents, grands and all
The round of applause when your name was called
Hugs and poses smiles all around
A celebration throughout the whole town

Forty-three years ago today
looking back, those were the days
There wasn't anything we didn't do
We did it all and still made it through
I knew you before the first day of school
I still know you, and that's pretty damn cool

Forty-three years ago today
before people disappeared, before God took them away
So many lost to memories that never fade away
Smiles reappear, as do the tears
seen in memories in all of these years

This was written just for you, and it's long overdue
Forty-three years ago today, I graduated with you

A truly nostalgic(ally)...moving piece, Thomas. Kudos!
