Bowling in the Dark by Chris Sorrenti
once more
you pack your bags
not for hospital, jail, or Salvation Army
this time, to aunt and uncle’s
physically farther
than previous residences
though in matters of the heart
much closer to home
perhaps a good sign
precious light at the end of the alley
where we’ve fought this war of wills
five years too long
neither side chose to play
seems to win
an opportunity to take account
of personality, situation
marijuana, the least of your addictions
compared to depression, anger, pain
temptations of an empty house
when dad’s gone to work
the latest demon of the week
perhaps a change of scenery
without perks
new guardian angels
emotionally removed from the battle
will shed wisdom
on what must no longer thrive
and though through it all
the longest toss of the ball
possibility that when you return
never again will you have to leave
