Rocks by Chris Sorrenti
visions rise amid cracks and crannies
of rocks long dead since days as liquid
September’s rain beginning to fall
walls crumbling silently in April’s hall
where wine and cheese
new religion once served
knights of the cross given their orders
promises made - favors deserved
rocks beating proudly in their chests
rising with the tide of life
sandcastles to be washed away

Author's Note: Since it was first written in 1979, a poem I’ve chiseled down and played with over the years, trying to get it as close to perfection as possible. In the case of other poems like this, they would have ended up in the waste basket long ago, but there was something about this one that kept me from doing so. Never been posted here before, this is the latest and probably final rendition.
