Her Other Name was Grace

by Johanna May

Reading "Comfort Animal" by Joy Ladin
exactly as the playlist changed to Darlingside's
"God of Loss"

Can you feel hurt
without wanting to hurt?
Feel pain travel in every corner
of your brain
shuffling laboriously along pathways
of memory and misguided hopes
begging for relief.
"Who?" they said,
who caused this.
And pain said:
"No, no, just look at me.
You don't need my name."

For her other name was grace.

Pain and grace - now there is food for thought. Thanks for this, Johanna.
