May Day

by Chris Sorrenti

tulip eyes
look up to the sky
like first baby teeth
that cut the dry
musk of barbecue
foretells a festive return
to the growing season

feel the caress
of a may first rain
blanket the material
of leather and suede
sweat shirt folly
run for shelter
holding hands with a smile
for spring is finally here

they’re chasing submarines
in the waters off norway
in moscow
they salute their missiles
but here
there’s just that peaceful
easy feeling
watching the grass
blush green again
as ten-speed racers
go whizzing by
derailing the last breath
of winter
