January 4th

unusually warm
bedroom window
purposely ajar

outside where
there should be snow
a steady downpour
of rain
freezing
as it hits the ground
and surrounding grove
a mile wide
in every direction

silence broken by
unexpected
never heard before
sounds
crash bang crash
as if some behemoth
pushing its way
through forest

then realization
what’s really happening
branches snapping
like twigs
from the weight
of ice
entire trees
tumbling over
in chorus

the only thing
relatable...
