Uncertain Skies by Chris Sorrenti
Into uncertain skies I fly
tomorrow
the only certainty being uncertainty
whether up high or on the ground
that past present and future
eternal
come together evenly
magnified ten-fold
by the whine of jet engines
on either side
Where my life
up till now
the failures
near misses
achievements
will fly alongside my window
at thirty-five thousand feet
playful ghosts ducking into clouds
then rising again to remind me
some things are within my reach
still others airborne only in faith
in that ethereal pilot
who holds full command of the sky
The last time I flew
1982
a far different world
the destination much shorter
skies friendlier
though machines are always
only machines
it wasn’t my time back then
tomorrow
Ottawa to Victoria…victory?
a whole new change of scenery
Earthbound…beyond?
Into uncertain skies
Destiny has called me
in a thin metal tube with wings
fragile as any bird’s
will allow me to mingle
with those of the same calling
hold tilt and sway
over cerebral jet streams
that could launch me
into a whole new career
And when I’ve landed
regardless of destination
past present and future
will be as they always have
with loved ones
there to greet me
no matter what side
