Sunday Afternoon Depression

by Chris Sorrenti

And just like that
it was over
from a whisper to a scream
to a whisper again
perhaps a gasp and a chuckle in-between

No reason to complain
when everything else is going well
the sun shining bright
after yesterday’s rain
though a bit coolish barks the thermometer
dribs and drabs all over the map
count your blessings
Mom and Dad would say
we all have our medicine to dull the nausea
though some afternoons
even it stops working
so turn to our talents once more

Surfing Facebook
brings on a temporary high
a little dopamine mixed with caffeine
anti-oxidants of the best kind
though too many postings
make others depressed
even angry
so hold back for a day or two
and besides
you were never comfortable
being that naked
if there’s such a thing as too much skin

Like a male organ in the cold
shrink back into yourself
the family pet advises
a quick cuddle with me
will make you feel better
at least until the big game
do or die for the Winterpeg Jets
could be worse
could be one of them
if they lose

So dive brain first
into the whiteout noise
a fellow citizen in more ways than one
and never forget my friend
tomorrow is another day
