Back at Start

by Thomas K. Hunt

Miles from the beginning there lies a simple fate
Is there time enough left?
Is it not too late?

Childhood girlfriends and boys
Down with the sorrows and up with the joys
The true ones have each others hearts
They all came together back at start

There's a life inside the darkness
Separate from what you see
Nothing like the likeness
No one is truly free

It's far from sight and most obscure
for the benefit of all
It's well secured you can rest assured
it's safe behind the wall

Misunderstood by many
Accepted by a few
Shunned by the majority
Rejected and persecuted too

Bones within a closet
locked behind the door
Peeking through the keyhole
Wanting so much more

Wasted in the emptiness
The need to change the day
Lost in the loneliness
Keeping it all at bay

Trapped within the madness
The longing to be free
Searching for the courage
to make it how it has to be

Miles from the beginning there's a place that lights the heart
The heart shines the brightest when it's back there at start
Seconds formmed the hours that has lead to this known
Heavy in the heart and the longing to go home

Oh, Thomas! This is masterful. When I read that third stanza I knew what the poem meant to me and it prepared me to read and plumb the rest. You have a poetic soul and you use it to cast your reader beyond conventions and easy readings and into something deeper, darker, more joyful and eternal. Thank you so much!
