Ten Years

by Chris Sorrenti

Hard to believe ten years has already passed
remember that poem I wrote for you?
odballs in an oddball world
so happy together
in that spring and summer of 2007

Bicycle and bus rides
museums and The Market
two fish & chip dinners for the price of one
at some seafood bar
can’t recall the name
Captain Jack’s maybe?

The rented cars
trips out to the country
for 35mm lunches
cottage up in Luskville on the Quebec side
as synchronicity would have it
directly across the Ottawa River from Baskin’s Beach
where so many other pleasant memories were made
not that long before our time

We climbed the mountain there
to catch the panorama
and of a new relationship
our love giving birth to a fur baby calico kitten
you named Eartha
before I had a chance to think of one

And now 10 years old
she too is showing her age
though if you catch her on a good day
can still be frisky

Happy anniversary luv
though we were never romantic
in a gushy kind of way
displaying our affection for one another in
painting poetry photographs philosophy
discussing Gerchev
till the wee hours
as the child we would never have

Over the course of time
we evolved from the physical to the spiritual
granting one another the freedom to
move on seek others
living apart but inseparable
in an esoteric way

But now the Cancer has returned
you tell me not to worry
it’s localized
the same oncologist you had before
instead of Chemo this time orders a
routine of radiation and anti-Estrogen pills

All of this and the uncertainty
calling us to together once again
you’ll come over on Saturday afternoon
and we’ll order Chinese
with Eartha still here to greet you

We will sip Cabernet Merlot
smoke a little marijuana
to help stem the tide of the disease
while listening to great music
discuss the state of the world
and all the philosophy that goes with it
till the wee hours
as back in the days
you called this place home
