Strangers on a Bus

by Chris Sorrenti

It was both
an exciting and disturbing experience

Strangers on a bus
she eyeing me and me eyeing her
standing in the aisle beside my seat
no mistake
the psychic connection
instinctively knowing we had destiny

Suddenly
the bus lurched
and she stumbled toward me
but instead of opening my arms
to catch her
without thinking
I reached up for the bar
as to protect myself

Immediately
both of us realizing what had happened
tragedy / sorrow
disappointment
reflected
in one another’s faces

Needless to say
the moment had been ruined
