Wasted Love

by Traci Mabats

I thought of love as
someone to grow old with
I thought I had it with you
Our love would grow deeper every year
like an emerald pool
glistening
secreted away in some remote
mountain range
our sanctuary from this world
But when I try to pour my love
into this pool
I hit a barrier and it falls to the ground
useless, inert
...wasted
And I am left standing alone
in a dark forest
with my empty, rejected heart
lost in the trees,
a maze of my own making

I guess I better learn
to like the cold
