Final Exams by Chris Sorrenti
The fuses were placed just a short while ago
Little or nothing would say they’d blow
So the eyes were closed / shoes removed
The glass was left / its contents used
And all like a wind the walking began
The mind being adjusted so that the glass was sand
The skin was ripped and painted of blood
But the pain was superficial / more than enough
And the elders just looked with that seen it all before
They fretted but didn’t care having left the boat
The educated regarded it as a senseless pain
They argued and they laughed but didn’t name
And when it was all over the soul was removed
The body was left / its contents used
The brain just looked with fear of expect
And laughed like a hyena asking what was next

Author's Note: I decided on an abstract ‘connect the dots’ approach for this one. It really was inspired by final exams, more-so the related pressure to pass, in grade 12 (1975), the year I graduated from Gloucester High School here in Ottawa.
