With me

by April Stale

I took a drive today
There’s a lake, woods, and a dam
We used to run there,
You challenged me
I loved it
Too stubborn to admit it
It’s pretty but
This place isn’t giving me the answers I hoped for

I’ll never laugh again
Like I did back then
That’s reserved for you
Not that you’ll ever look back
I look back all the time

This can’t be where the story goes
How do I want you so much now
When back then
You were with me

With me
In that house of mirrors, in that hotel, your apartment, your car
With me
A missed longing, missed gestures, a cheated friendship
With me

I missed out on my adventure
For comfort
And it’s not an adventure I can ever have again
Nothing will replace it

If I admit how wrong I was
Will you come back
If I admit how no one will compare to you
Will you come back

And now you remain only in my mind
No new memories with you
That’s my punishment
Give me anything but that

while reading this, i was listening to "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" by Porcupine Tree, which somehow goes absolutely perfectly. this poem has a very visual, almost eerie quality, like a half remembered dream you can see sepia echoes of in your mind. superb.

i say give it five minutes and we can make regrets over every decision we ever made, make or will... the fact that choosing something means not choosing other things is almost at cliche level, but the confessional longing to bear the self inflicted scars is forever newsworthy. It your task to realize you can wallow in the paralysis of grief, or rise like the Thunderbird and make new all things again. What is the worry in rekindling that which should ignite by its own desire to combust...
