so what

by Peter Humphreys

deep deeper
than
I'd known
before

I perch
on a brow
of hills
by way of
shepherd paths
bedevilled
by midges
eyeballs bitten
gorging
my skin

so what
mad to come
alone
mad not to

through my bloody eyes
I see
bewildering emptiness
no lights
no farms
just the distant roar
of a spume blown sea

below
mountains crown
endless
brown black bog
heather purple
gorse yellow

I drop to my knees
in tiredness
and wonderment

an old hut
roofless
solid
is in sight

tonight
I'll sleep
with shitty
black head sheep

no-one will miss me
except maybe
the skylark
dancing
for heaven's delight

There is a lot of raw beauty in this that seems to take its bit of blood from those who seek to witness it. The roofless hut seems to protect, yet not. Lots of good tension in this and one wonders if the narrator makes it home in one piece. Thanks for this!
