When He Smiles

by Brian Francis

I watch my boy and I see him grow
a courteous and kind young man
when someone nearby needs some help
he will always run to lend a hand

I've seen him hurt and sorrow filled
the world is cruel to a gentle soul
I've held his head against my chest
as he's cried nearly out of control

But then he seems to catch his breath
and forgiveness floods his eyes
he appears somehow to understand
questions I've sought most all of my life

I wish that I could be just like him
I think I was in younger days
I cherish the lessons he teaches me
and that smile always on his face

I love him more than I could say
And I am proud as any man could be
He's still not too old to hold my hand
And my buddy is excellent company.
