I Broke the Ribbon by Chris Sorrenti
Alone in the dark
I sit here thinking
Hoping for the best
In what’s only the worst
Who was I kidding?
When I broke the ribbon
Just a fan in the audience
With my ears closed tight:
Monkey see monkey do
Who are we to question you?
Just a thorn on the rose
Ready to fight:
Monkey see monkey do
Who are we to move against you?
Just putty in the hands
Aloft in the wind of fear:
Monkey do do monkey see?
See what you’ve done in letting it be
And alone in the day
I shall sit here thinking
Dreaming of the worst
In what’s only the best
For who was I fooling?
When I broke the ribbon
Whispering into a microphone
That echoed in the darkness
