Before the Rubicon

by Chris Sorrenti

If you must make the journey,
then we will do it together, son,
where Hell is but a pill away,
and God, a reluctant bystander.

Having resided there before,
I know all the popular sites.
Let me take you then
on a first-class tour
of a city built on quicksand,
whose flag of delusion
flies at full mast
from every crooked tower.

One needn’t stay long
to be captivated by the beauty,
nor see how quickly it fades;
full-time residents
subtly transformed into ugliness,
unique to their own personalities.

Grown beyond my control,
say what you will,
do what you must,
but be warned:
each day there,
the road back
more difficult to find,
and those lucky enough...
never the same person.
