Entranceway

by Chris Sorrenti

Beware you travellers who dare to wander
There’s nothing stable here
To keep you settled
In this dimension
Change is nothing but an engine
Metamorphosis – the U.S.S. Iowa
You can hear her guns roar
Like a July thunderstorm
Raining words the size of people

Here
Roads stretch both far and mighty
Into an horizon of endless fields
And colours – yes colours
You will see them
Learn their meaning in the blink of an eye
For here the speed is clean and natural
Creation and destruction in a simul’ role
Think of this poem as just an entranceway
For you the readers of the storm

Author's Note: The opening poem to an earlier manuscript, titled The Politics Of Imagery (POI)(1982). With the reorganization of my work in 1997, it became a part of Enter Every System (1980-1985). It was the first collection given an alphabetical title. Up to that point, earlier collections were simply titled by their years, including 1980 and 1981. 1983 was then originally titled Rhythmic Messages, 1984, as Deep, and 1985 as Adventures In The Poetry System (ATPS). ATPS was later resurrected as a title in 2003. 1986 to 1989 had also been previously titled by year and/or title. For example, 1986 had originally been called Deciduous Calling. With the reorganization, all poems from 1986 to mid 1989 would be known collectively as A Well Placed Mess (AWPM). Also of note is the last line in S1. It would later be reused in the poem To Uncle Irving (1994) in This Masterpiece Of Madness. Although I don’t consider Entranceway to be one of my strongest pieces for that time or considering what followed in years to come, it’s a good example of how I was learning to combine words/imagery, and writing them into more than one poem so that my work as a whole displayed connectedness.
