I Look Forward to the Summer Solstice

by Meghan Helmich

I look forward to the summer solstice.
My heavy heart cannot take much more of this heat,
but at least the days will be shorter.

Less suffering through daylight.
The boorish bully of a sun will fall to his knees and
Bring the dream-filled nights.

I will breathe in the darkness through my open mouth,
swallow back the humidity until my brow dries
and let sleep break me in two.

One side, beating and warm and struggling to wake
the next day, still hours away.
The other side at peace with the death.

I love that third stanza.
