Excuse Me by Chris Sorrenti
Excuse me
while I live a little longer
and I hope that you will too
with the grace of God
despite the war
that rages all around us
and if…when
our time should come
let us know the right thing to do
And no
I won’t be travelling
to Manchester…London
Paris…or Berlin
no offence to those who live there
but it’s no longer safe
for me to walk down those streets
though it’s already happened here
in Ottawa too
And in this
the anarchists have won a small victory
self-preservation being the key
unlike those
unable to see the beauty in life
the blind leading the blind
to self-destruction
for them
the hour of judgement
has come all too soon
And so
excuse me
if I should live a little longer
as I hope that you will too
though if the day comes
I’m in the right place
at the wrong time
my name and photo subsequently
flashed across the news
please plant a flower and candle
at the place where I fell
as I would do the same for you

Posted by Julie Adams on 06/06/17 at 05:51 PM upon reading, my impression, this piece evokes some sadness and shame, the melancholy tone is not all encompassing however, a hint of hope and even rebelliousness glimmers therein...thank you for this thought-provoking piece. -jewels |
Posted by Kris Mara on 06/07/17 at 08:54 PM ...a heartbreaking portrait of our uncertain times...I'm always glad to hear your words and perspective...and this one is both hard for my heart to read and lessens the space that some have tried to place between us all...glad to read you, as always Chris... -K |
